Though SUPER important to your home, gutters often get neglected until something goes wrong. Damage to your gutters can cause more issues for your entire home. Every home needs gutters. Otherwise the runoff from your roof could go directly into your home.
The purpose of gutters
A gutter’s main purpose is to funnel water off of your roof to the ground away from your home. Too much water falling close to your home can cause the soil to erode and as a result, ruin your home’s foundation. Homes built to code are on a slight slope to guide runoff from the foundation; but even without gutters erosion may happen. Therefore, homes without gutters are at risk of foundation damage.
There are multiple problems that can occur as a result of neglecting your gutters. When not maintained, the debris and runoff from your roof can attract rodents, mosquitos, bees, wasps, etc. When not cleaned off, gutters can get clogged with debris from your roof, causing water to pool on the roof and around the house. And as previously stated, can cause erosion. These pools of water could also make their way into your attic causing leaks in your home.
If gutters are properly installed and maintained, the provide these benefits:
Soil around the house is stabilized
Foundation problems can be avoided
Flooding under houses and in basements can be prevented
Erosion can be prevented and this preserves landscaping and turf
Water damage to siding can be prevented
Water staining on brick and stone masonry can be prevented
Settling and cracking of sidewalks, patios and driveways can be lessened
Exterior doors and garage overhead doors can be preserved
Leaf guards are one way of reducing the maintenance required for gutters. They don’t completely erase the need to clean your gutters every once in awhile, but they do help protect your gutters from a massive amount of debris. They do not however, protect from 100% of debris. We recommend an annual inspection of your gutter system to make sure everything is functioning properly.
