We Build More than Roofs, We Build People

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, Bone Dry Roofing (BDR), headquartered in Indianapolis, serving homeowners and businesses across the Midwest, as well as Colorado, and Florida, supported the SkillsUSA State Championship competition at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. BDR contributed to the event by supplying materials for the roofing competition for Mia Pudilo, a high school junior in Hammond, Indiana, who is enrolled in the NRCA TPO curriculum. Mia applied a Thermoplastic Membrane on an 8×8 roof mock-up provided by Bone Dry Roofing. Based on the results of her achievement, she will go on to represent the state of Indiana in the SkillsUSA National Competition! This event will be held in Atlanta, GA on June 24th.

The National Roofing and Construction Association (NRCA), of which Bone Dry Roofing is a member, announced in May of 2019 they had partnered with SkillsUSA and now is a SkillsUSA Official Business Partner. This year’s competition in Indiana and other participating states is the fruition of that announcement.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure the U.S. has a skilled workforce. It provides educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education in U.S. classrooms. SkillsUSA in partnering with the NRCA has added a roofing option to the already broad curriculum.

In attendance was John Espendshade, Workforce Development Director for NRCA. John pioneered the partnership of NRCA on behalf of the roofing industry. Jeff Johnson, Manager of Bone Dry Roofing Recruiting, is now also serving as the Technical Advisor with Bone Dry Roofing Commercial Divisions support, for SkillsUSA in the state of Indiana.

The event kicked off Friday and extended through Saturday. With over 2,700 students participating in Indiana SkillsUSA, it came down to over 1,000 students competing in the weekend’s State Championships.

Bone Dry Roofing, represented by Kenny Shelton, Indianapolis Commercial Roofing Repair Technician, and Jeff Johnson, guided two of the SkillsUSA carpentry competition participants, also high school students from Indiana in building the mock-up used for the TPO competition. Jeff and Kenny also served as advisors, coaches, and judges for the roofing event.

Bone Dry was proud to support the SkillsUSA organization and students in their education, hands-on learning, and career aspirations.
